An Inspection Drone Engineering Case Study Featuring MAXYOND 4-in-1 4S 80A ESC, Gimbal Payload Integration, and 30–40 Minutes of Flight Endurance
01. Project Overview
A customer approached MAXYOND with a requirement for a compact, foldable quadcopter UAV equipped with a high-definition gimbal camera, extended flight endurance, and reliable flight control under challenging operating conditions.
Rather than developing an entirely new aircraft, the project adopted the existing NOVA-4T quadcopter platform as its foundation, with customized system configurations to meet the customer's specific requirements.
The key project objectives included:
-
Integration of a multi-sensor gimbal camera.
-
Flight endurance exceeding 30 minutes.
-
Reliable control in challenging radio-frequency environments.
-
Flight stability assistance in indoor and GNSS-limited environments.
The project combined an existing UAV platform with selected propulsion components, onboard equipment, and system-level integration.

02. Engineering Challenges
The project required careful consideration of several interconnected engineering factors.
Payload, Weight & Endurance
The UAV needed to accommodate the K40T gimbal and its onboard systems while maintaining a compact, foldable structure. The propulsion and battery configuration had to support the complete aircraft weight while meeting the customer's flight endurance requirement.
Propulsion System Compatibility
The selected ESC, motors, and battery needed to operate as an integrated propulsion system. Component selection had to account for the airframe configuration, onboard payload, and overall flight requirements.
Communication & Positioning Requirements
The customer required a customized communication arrangement for operation in challenging radio-frequency conditions. The project also included optical flow positioning assistance to support flight operation where GNSS positioning may be limited.
These considerations required a system-level integration approach rather than simply selecting individual components.
03. MAXYOND Customized UAV Solution
The solution was developed around the NOVA-4T, a foldable quadcopter platform with a 480 mm wheelbase and a carbon-fiber and plastic composite structure.

The project configuration incorporated a MAXYOND 4-in-1 80A ESC, 2408-series motors, and a 4S battery, together with the K40T gimbal payload.
System Configuration
| Component | Project Configuration |
|---|---|
| Base Platform | NOVA-4T |
| UAV Configuration | 11-Inch Foldable Quadcopter |
| Wheelbase | 480 mm |
| Frame Material | Carbon Fiber + Plastic Composite |
| ESC | MAXYOND 4-in-1 80A ESC |
| Motors | 2408 Series |
| Battery | 4S |
| Gimbal Payload | K40T Multi-Sensor Gimbal |
| Positioning Assistance | Optical Flow |
| Fully Loaded Takeoff Weight | 1,730 g |
| Verified Flight Endurance | 30–40 Minutes |
Propulsion System Integration
The MAXYOND 4-in-1 80A ESC was integrated with the 2408-series motors and 4S battery as part of the quadcopter propulsion system.
The component configuration was selected in consideration of the NOVA-4T platform, the installed payload, and the customer's endurance requirements.
This project demonstrates how propulsion components can be incorporated into an existing UAV platform to meet application-specific system requirements.
K40T Gimbal Integration
The completed UAV was equipped with a K40T multi-sensor gimbal incorporating:
-
48 MP wide-angle and zoom cameras.
-
640 × 512 thermal imaging.
-
11× optical zoom and up to 160× hybrid zoom.
-
Laser ranging capability from 5 to 1,200 m.
-
Three-axis mechanical stabilization.
The gimbal provided the aircraft with integrated visual, thermal, and ranging capabilities.
The project also incorporated optical flow positioning assistance and a customized communication arrangement as part of the overall onboard system configuration.

The UAV and accessories arranged in the transport case before delivery.
04. Flight Verification & Results
Following integration, the completed aircraft underwent pre-delivery flight verification.
The fully equipped UAV, including its battery, gimbal, and other onboard components, had a takeoff weight of 1,730 g.
Actual flight testing achieved 30–40 minutes of endurance, meeting the customer's requirement for more than 30 minutes of flight time.
Indoor flight operation was also demonstrated during office-based verification, providing an opportunity to observe the completed aircraft's handling and control behavior.
These results relate to the specific aircraft configuration delivered for this project. Flight endurance and operational performance may vary according to payload, battery condition, environmental conditions, and operating requirements.
